For example, in 1696, Ramallah was called Bethel (Beit-El, the House of God), Hebron was called Hebron, and the cave of Mahpel was called El-Khalil (the nickname of Abraham) by the Arabs.
*Relandi only refers to Muslims as Bedouin nomads who came to cities as seasonal workers in agriculture or construction.
* There were about 550 people in Gaza, half of them Jews and half Christians. Jews were successful in agriculture, in particular vineyards, olives and wheat, and Christians engaged in trade and
by transportation.
* Jews lived in Tveria and Tsfat, but their occupation is not mentioned, except for the traditional fishing in Kinneret.

About the Ancient Israelites
The Israelites were a Semitic tribe (probably related to the Arameans) who left Mesopotamia in the 14th century BC (along with other tribes that founded Ammon, Edom, and Moab) and migrated to the southeast of Palestine. Over the next century, the Israelites conquered and developed the country, adopting the Canaanite dialect. By 1000 BC, the Israelites lived on both banks of the Jordan from the Dead Sea to the northern edge of Merom. In total, as is known, there were ten tribes of Israel (not counting Simeon and Judah) that settled in Canaan: Asher, Zebulun, Dan, Naphtali, Issachar, Benjamin, Gad, Reuben, Ephraim, and Manasseh. The tribe of Levi was not given land in Israel.
In the struggle with the indigenous Canaanite population for the acquisition of new lands, temporary associations of the Israelite tribes grew stronger. On the other hand, the settlement of the Israelite tribes over a comparatively large area had as its consequence some of their disunity. Thus, the tribe of the Jews, who settled in the south in the mountainous region west of the Dead Sea, later called Judea, early separated from the main core of the Israelite tribes, who captured a large and fertile part of Palestine in the north.
The conquest of Palestine was completed by the Israelite tribes relatively easily and quickly, since the indigenous population of the country - the Canaanites - were greatly weakened by the rule of the Egyptian enslavers, constant wars, endless invasions and raids of the Hapiru, and then the "Sea Peoples".
Until the beginning of the 11th century, the Israelite tribes were governed by councils of the clan nobility and the so-called "judges" - elected officials, and sometimes simply successful military leaders. There were popular assemblies.
The creation of the State of Israel was also accelerated by external events. At the turn of the 13th and 12th centuries, the Philistines settled along the Mediterranean coast, having previously attacked the eastern coast of the Mediterranean and Egypt as part of the "Sea Peoples". The Philistines captured fortified cities, the most powerful of which was Gaza. They already knew iron weapons, and their warriors, equipped with them, became a formidable enemy for the Israelite tribes, who at that time had only bronze weapons. According to legend, the Philistines monopolized the manufacture of iron weapons, not allowing their use by the conquered population.
In the second half of the 11th century, military units of the alliance of Philistine cities began to invade the border region of the Judean tribe adjacent to them. Here they conquered a number of fortresses, such as Lachish, in which archaeologists discovered a significant amount of their ceramics. The Philistines did not try to penetrate deep into this poor, infertile and mountainous part of the country; they directed their main attacks to the northeast. The Philistines inflicted several heavy defeats on the Israelites, captured a number of cities, and among them the main sanctuary of Israel - the city of Shiloh.
Internal social changes required the creation of a state organization in Israel; external failures accelerated this process.
Attempts to create a state began in the 11th century and ended by the end of that century, when a certain Saul from the tribe of Benjamin became the first king of all Israel. He was elected during a national assembly. Saul subjugated all the Israeli tribes, including the Jews, and this allowed him to win a number of victories over the Philistines, but then failures began. They culminated in the defeat and death of Saul and his eldest sons on the battlefield. The severed head of the Israeli king was carried by his enemies "throughout the land of the Philistines," and his headless body was hung on the wall of the city of Beth-Shean, a former Egyptian and now Philistine fortress deep in Israel.
One of Saul's military leaders from the tribe of Jews, David, was also involved in Saul's death. He fled from Saul's service, led a military detachment in the south of the country and went over to the service of the Philistines, and although he did not participate in the decisive battle, his betrayal weakened the forces of the Israelites and gave the Philistines the opportunity to defeat Saul.

Enuma Elish

Enuma Elish is a Sumerian text about the creation of the world. The original text in Sumerian in the form of cuneiform was deciphered by scientists and archaeologists relatively recently.

The Enuma Elish would later be the inspiration for the Hebrew scribes who created the text now known as the biblical Book of Genesis. Prior to the 19th century, the Bible was considered the oldest book in the world and its narratives were thought to be completely original. Famous stories such as the Fall of Man and the Great Flood were originally conceived and written down in Sumer, translated and modified later in Babylon, and reworked by the Assyrians before they were used by the Hebrew scribes for the versions which appear in the Bible. Although the basic paradigm of the biblical narratives and the Mesopotamian stories align closely, there are still significant differences as noted by scholar Stephen Bertman:
Both Genesis and Enuma Elsih are religious texts which detail and celebrate cultural origins: Genesis describes the origin and founding of the Jewish people under the guidance of the Lord; Enuma Elish recounts the origin and founding of Babylon under the leadership of the god Marduk. Then light is created to replace the darkness. Afterward, the heavens are made and in them heavenly bodies are placed. Finally, man is created. In revising the Mesopotamian creation story for their own ends, the Hebrew scribes tightened the narrative and the focus but retained the concept of the all-powerful deity who brings order from chaos. Marduk, in the Enuma Elish, establishes the recognizable order of the world - just as God does in the Genesis tale - and human beings are expected to recognize this great gift and honor the deity through service. In Mesopotamia, in fact, it was thought that humans were co-workers with the gods to maintain the gift of creation and keep the forces of chaos at bay.

Marduk gained prominence in Babylon during the reign of Hammurabi and quickly surpassed the former patron deity, Inanna/Ishtar, in popularity. During Hammurabi's reign, in fact, a number of previously popular female deities were replaced by male gods. The Enuma Elish, praising Marduk as the most powerful of all the gods, therefore became increasingly popular as the god himself rose in prominence and his city of Babylon grew in power.
